1. The True Nature of Ramyeon Sari
‘Ramyeon sari’ is a product that consists of only the noodle block, sold without the soup packet. It is typically used as an add-in to various dishes like budae-jjigae (army stew), dak-galbi (spicy stir-fried chicken), or tteokbokki to make them more filling. It’s easy to think it’s healthier than regular ramen because it lacks the soup packet.
2. The Unchanged Problem, Even Without the Packet
However, ramyeon sari is just the noodle block, which is identical to the ‘fried noodles’ from a regular package of instant ramen.
– Fried Refined Carbohydrate: The noodles are made from refined wheat flour, which spikes blood sugar, and they are deep-fried for preservation and texture. Therefore, they retain the problems of high carbohydrate content and saturated fat.
– Broth Absorption: When you add the noodle sari to a stew or stir-fry, it acts like a sponge, soaking up the salty broth, seasonings, and oil from the main dish. As a result, you end up consuming a large amount of sodium and fat, just as you would with a regular bowl of ramen, even without the soup packet.
3. The Result: A Carbohydrate Bomb
In conclusion, adding a ramyeon sari to a dish is equivalent to adding a lump of refined carbohydrates that will spike your blood sugar at the end of a meal. It is one of the worst choices for blood sugar management. It can be even worse for blood sugar than mixing a small amount of rice into the same broth.
Summary: Ramyeon sari is missing the soup packet, but its fundamental nature as a fried, refined flour noodle does not change. As it absorbs the broth and oil from the dish, it has a detrimental effect on blood sugar, blood pressure, and weight management, and must be avoided.
