1. The ‘Healthy Ingredient’ Trap
Sweet potato is a healthy starchy food, rich in dietary fiber and vitamins. When a healthy-sounding ingredient is in the name of a beverage, we can easily be mistaken into thinking the entire drink is healthy.
2. The Reality of a Sweet Potato Latte
However, most sweet potato lattes sold at cafes are made with the following ingredients:
– Sweet Potato Paste: This is made by mixing boiled and mashed sweet potatoes with a tremendous amount of sugar, syrup, or condensed milk to create a sweet paste.
– Milk and Dairy: Regular milk or sometimes high-fat whipping cream is used for a smooth taste.
– Additional Syrups and Toppings: Extra syrups like vanilla syrup may be added to enhance the sweetness, and it is often topped with whipped cream or nuts.
3. The Result: A Liquid Dessert
Consequently, a sweet potato latte is not a ‘healthy drink’ but is closer to a ‘high-calorie liquid dessert.’ A single serving often contains more carbohydrates and sugars than a full bowl of rice. Sugar in liquid form is absorbed very quickly, causing a sharp spike in blood sugar. It is one of the worst choices for post-meal blood sugar management.
Summary: Contrary to its healthy image, a ‘sweet potato latte’ is a high-sugar, high-calorie beverage with large amounts of added sugar, syrup, and milk. It offers almost none of the health benefits of a plain sweet potato and is a major culprit for spiking blood sugar, so people with diabetes must avoid it.
